40% discount on weekday tours for senior citizens

Post by Gaybutton »

The article doesn't say whether farang are eligible for this, but I think farang are eligible.

In any case, for me this is yet another thanks, but no thanks.

While I realize the TaT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) is trying to come up with ideas to help rescue the tourism industry, the TaT boss thinks there won't be much of a recovery until 2022. See the second article below.

TAT plans 40% discount on weekday tours for senior citizens

Dec 02, 2020

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is planning 40 per cent discounts on tour packages at a maximum Bt5,000 for each senior citizen who travels during the weekdays under the second phase of the “Rao Tiew Duay Kan” (We Travel Together) campaign.

The first phase runs until December 31 and offers eligible people a 40 per cent discount on rooms and restaurants at participating establishments. They also receive an e-voucher when checking into a hotel, as well as a 40 per cent flight fare refund when they check out.

“At a Centre for Economic Situation Administration meeting on Wednesday, we will propose the scheme to offer similar benefits from the Rao Tiew Duay Kan campaign to senior citizens aged over 55 who travel on weekdays,” said TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn.

“This will help promote tourism during the weekdays and reduce crowding at tourist attractions during the weekends.”

Yuthasak said the senior-citizen campaign will use Bt5 billion from a total budget of Bt20 billion that TAT received to run the entire campaign.

“The maximum discount a person can get is Bt5,000. Registration will open for 1 million senior citizens. Eligible candidates must buy a package tour from a domestic tour operator to receive a 40 per cent discount. This is to ensure revenue distribution among local travel entrepreneurs,” he said.

The other criteria include: the package must feature cross-provincial travel and more than a 3-day/2-night stay from a tour operator who has a licence approved before January 1, 2020.

With ‘Phoenix’, TAT writes off 2021, focuses tourism plans on 2022

By Pattaya Mail

December 2, 2020

Having lost 2020 to the coronavirus, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is already writing off 2021, making its plans for full recovery in 2022.

TAT Gov. Yuthasak Supasorn said Nov. 30 that next year’s tourism outlook is difficult to predict and, thus, the organization has launched Project Phoenix to have Thailand rise from the ashes of the pandemic to generate up to 2.5 trillion baht in tourism revenue in 2022, 83 percent of 2019’s income.

The fact that, two years from now, tourism still is expected to be 17 percentage points lower than 2019 shows the lasting impact the coronavirus pandemic will have on the world.

Yuthasak said the tourism market in 2022 will look very different from 2019, with tourists who previously came to Thailand having different travel priorities. That means Thailand must focus on tourists who spend more and stay longer than in the past.

In the interim, TAT will propose that the government extend the “We Travel Together” subsidized domestic-tourism program.

Originally conceived as a way for Thais to book 5 million hotel rooms by Oct. 15, the program finally might hit the 5-million mark by the end of the year. Yuthasak said TAT will propose adding funding for another 1-2 million hotel rooms.

That should get the country through the end of the pandemic, with vaccinated tourists being allowed to return to Thailand in the middle of next year without having to undergo quarantine. That should see the industry start to recover in the third quarter, he said, leading to a booming high season driven by European tourists.
