Chatuchak weekend market to open 6 days a week

Post by Gaybutton »

It will be interesting to see how this works out. Many shops were open every day anyway. On Wednesdays it was mostly plant and tree vendors. Thursdays was wholesale tropical fish.

In any case, if you have never been to the Chatuchak market (or even if you have) it is certainly well worth a visit. It is enormous, so be prepared to do a lot of walking and spending several hours there - and you still will not have scratched the surface of seeing it all.

If you don't take a taxi to get there, the most convenient way is to take the MRT. Get off at the Kamphaeng Phet station, not the Chatuchak Park station. You'll find yourself right in the middle of the market.

The article lists the closing times, but it does not specify opening time - I recommend 10:00am.

Chatuchak weekend market to open 6 days a week

27 Mar 2021

Bangkok's famous Chatuchak weekend market will be open six days a week starting mid-April in an effort to boost the income of vendors affected by Covid-19.

Wullaya Wattanarat, deputy permanent city clerk of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), said the market had lost almost half of its Thai customers due to the pandemic and economic slowdown.

To help the market's 10,000-plus vendors, Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang tasked the BMA's committee on the management of markets with promoting and supporting the vendors' businesses.

The committee has now ruled that vendors can operate on all weekdays except Mondays, to allow for cleaning and dredging of the gutters.

Stall-holders will be allowed to stay open until 6pm from Tuesday to Thursday, and until 10pm from Friday to Sunday.

Events will be held around the market's Clock Tower to help promote products following complaints from vendors whose stalls are located deep inside the market.

Those vendors said that customers were not bothering to walk to their stalls because it was too inconvenient.

Anything constructed in prohibited areas alongside the gutters has been demolished, Ms Wullaya said, and more will be removed by the market's perimeter fences. The market's facelift is expected to be completed by mid April and certainly by the time the market is open for six days a week.

Each of the market's 31 zones will be invited to nominate one person to represent it when vendors submit opinions to the BMA on key issues.

Ms Wullaya said it was the government's policy to develop the market for the benefit of its vendors and called for cooperation by all those involved.

In January, the BMA cut rents at its 10 markets, including Chatuchak, to ease the plight of vendors hit by the coronavirus.

Plan to extend Chatuchak Market opening hours suspended

April 8, 2021

Plans to ease restrictions at Chatuchak Market have been postponed in response to the latest outbreak of Covid-19 in Bangkok.

As a result, Chatuchak vendors will not be allowed to sell goods on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday without permission, said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). Plans to allow vendors to stay open late until 10pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday have also been suspended. Meanwhile, the ban on activities in the clocktower area remains in place.

"Since the number of Covid-19 cases has increased quickly, the BMA has to postpone the abovementioned measures until the situation is resolved," said BMA deputy permanent secretary Wallaya Wattanarat.

She added that Chatuchak Market is still operating as usual.

The flower and plant market is open from Tuesday to Thursday, while the weekend market is operating from Friday to Sunday.

"To contain the spread of Covid-19, retailers and customers are required to wear face masks, maintain distance, wash hands regularly with soap or alcohol gel and use the ThaiChana app to check in," Wallaya added.

Third wave forces Chatuchak Market to postpone weekday opening until June

April 29, 2021

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Wednesday decided to postpone the easing of weekday lockdown measures at popular Chatuchak Market until June or until the Covid-19 situation improves, BMA deputy permanent secretary Wanlaya Wattanarat said.

The measures have been in place since March.

To prevent Covid-19 from spreading further, the market had been ordered shut on weekdays and allowed to open only on weekends.

“We had planned to help increase revenue for merchants by opening the market until 6pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, while on Friday, Saturday and Sunday merchants could open until 10pm. The market was to be closed every Monday for cleaning,” she said.

“However, due to the third wave of outbreak, the BMA has postponed the weekday opening until June 1 or when the situation improves,” Wanlaya said.

“All promotional activities scheduled to be held around the clock tower in the market will also be postponed accordingly,” she said.

Wanlaya added that merchants and shoppers at Chatuchak need to adhere to the “D-M-H-T-T-A” measures as advised by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, which are: distancing from others, wearing a mask, washing your hands regularly, checking your body temperature, testing for Covid-19, and using the Thai Chana or Mor Chana application.

Bangkok’s Chatuchak weekend market closed until July 29

By Pattaya Mail

July 17, 2021

Chatuchak weekend market will be closed from July 16-29, to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

BMA deputy clerk Wullaya Wattanarat noted that the capital has been under increased restrictions since July 12 to limit the movement of people, with convenience stores, markets and walking streets closing at 8pm. However, the coronavirus outbreak is becoming increasingly serious and could put the country’s public health system at risk of a crisis.

She said many newly infected people show no symptoms and could easily transmit the disease. Many vendors at Chatuchak live in other provinces and have to travel between provinces, so the BMA authorities in charge of the market have decided it would be safer to keep it closed from July 16-29.

Of the 67 COVID deaths reported nationwide on Friday, Bangkok logged 33. At 2,195, the capital also reported the most new infections.
