Agreed. Thai gaols are hell-holes, reserved for the poor and racial minorities while the rich and powerful seem to be able to buy their way out of trouble.
Another issue is specific to this case; in UK law it is termed "common purpose". This refers to crimes committed by members of a group, for example a gang of young kids involved in a fight, or stealing from a shop or in one case I had dealings with, the rape of a girl .
Being present is often enough for al the group to be punished equally. In an incident like this, if a group of six friends go out drinking and two or three are subsequently involved in a fight or assault, all of them are held equally responsible even if some played no part in the crime and didn't even see what happened.
