Foodland Supermarket Co has doubled its investment budget to 1 billion baht to expand its supermarket and restaurant businesses this year.
Of the total budget, 200 million baht will be spent to open a 20th Foodland store at Terminal 21 Korat shopping mall, which will come with a new concept store and provide service around the clock.
Foodland Korat, which is due to open in October, will be the first branch in the Northeast and feature 3,500 square metres of space.
Some 300 million baht will be used to build a distribution centre in eastern Bangkok to support future growth, with the remaining 500 million baht allocated to expand restaurant brands Tim Ho Wan and Mr Pizza.
"Customers' purchasing power has yet to return to normal and seems to be weaker after the Songkran festival," said Foodland chairman Somsak Teraphatanakul. "But our expansion will be at a faster pace than in the past because it's a long-term strategy."
Prasert Sriuranpong, president of Siam Retail Development Co, the developer of Terminal 21 shopping mall in Bangkok's Asok area, said Foodland will be one of the key magnets for Terminal 21 Korat, along with four or five other anchor tenants.
Mr Somsak said building the partnership with Terminal 21 is in line with Foodland's five-year growth strategy, which is devised to be more intensive than in previous years in order to reach new customers while coping with today's competitive retail world.
"We're confident that Foodland at Terminal 21 Korat will offer a new shopping experience to consumers because it will come with a fresh new look, and we anticipate 5,000-6,000 customers per day," Mr Somsak said.
Apart from Nakhon Ratchasima, Foodland plans to open two more branches this year: one on Rama III Road in Bangkok and another in one of the provinces.
The company expects revenue to reach 10 billion baht in the next three to five years, with Foodland branches numbering 30 by then.
Foodland's revenue including supermarket and restaurant businesses was 8 billion baht last year and is expected to grow by 3-5% this year, driven by new supermarkets and restaurants.

There is still nothing happening with the expected Foodland on Thepprasit Road in Pattaya. The sign is still there, but in all this time not a shovelful of dirt has been turned to start the construction. Seems to me the plan has been shelved indefinitely. For some strange reason, I can't help but wonder if Foodland got second thoughts if maybe - just maybe - too many greedy hands were out, all demanding too much.

Any hope for Pattaya is this sentence "Apart from Nakhon Ratchasima, Foodland plans to open two more branches this year: one on Rama III Road in Bangkok and another in one of the provinces."
