Thai AirAsia adds Sihanoukville to Cambodia routes

22 April, 2019

Thai AirAsia is to start direct service from Don Mueang airport to the Cambodian beach town of Sihanoukvillee.

The airline on Monday announced the new route, to commence on July 1, as part of its strategy to extend its Network around the region from its Thai hub at Don Mueang.

"The new route is expected to serve the millions of foreign Travelers who use Thailand as a hub, while for Thai Travellers, Sihanoukville offers an affordable beach and cultural getaway," Thai AirAsia chief executive officer Santisuk Klongchaiya said.

Sihanoukville, about 230 km south of Phnom Penh, is also cambodia's main deep sea port and an investment hub, particularly for the Chinese. The former low key, backpacker beaches in the area are now dotted with Chinese hotels and casinos, with scores more under construction.

The No-Frills Airline will offer four weekly flights on the route from July 1. It is the third Cambodian destination for the airline after Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

A welcome option for anyone starting in Bangkok.

For anyone starting in Pattaya, allowing 3 hours to DMK, 40 minutes for processing, 1 hour safety margin, 1 hour flight & 30 minutes to clear the airport & get into town, I suppose it is still faster than the bus, but not by that much.

Other than allowing the time to get to Bangkok from Pattaya, I don't see anything else different once you get to the airport.

I had thought that this flight might make it easier to get to the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc which I wrote about on another thread.

A ferry from Sihanoukville to Phu Quoc would be ideal. Alas at present there are no Immigration and Customs facilities for such a ferry at either end. So getting to Phu Quoc still requires a road trip across to Vietnam and the either a short flight or ferry from there.
