JAPAN: youth not interested in the real thing...

Post by pong »

Yesterday in the newspaper here I read a report from Japan: from the youth from 16-20 yrs. about 30-35% (around a third) is not interested in having real sex, from the slightly older group 20-24 it was around 20%. Figures are for males, for females they are slightly lower. Many of those asked for say it was unhealthy,or even dirty (which is a big taboo in Japan). These are general questions and not specific for gay. Using the mobuy fone or other network gadgets and sites seemed more interesting as a real meet-up.
Sorry, I tried to find a source for this to link on, but have not yet found it.
Would this be the future for Thailand to, as so many of these fads sooner or later wave over the seas in Asia?

I highly doubt it. Are you sure that these polls aren't just reflecting the innate nature of the Japanese to keep everything unspoken or perhaps a result of the current educational HIV/AIDS programs that seem to be on the increase?

Whatever the case, sex is something that isn't going away... whether it be Japan, Thailand or Alaska!

Having lived in Japan, having friends who still live there, and being a regular visitor, these 'findings' are highly suspicious. Whilst it would be wrong to draw conclusions solely from my own experiences, Japan has a huge underground sex industry that increasingly involves young people (certainly the 18 - 20 group). Because it is known by most of the population to exist and it's underground, I would expect most young people in the 16 - 24 age bracket automatically to deny being involved in any form of sexual activity or to be interested in it - just in case any of their elders or contemporaries might suspect they were involved. Huge numbers of Japanese girls work in clubs as hostesses. Japanese porn magazines and DVDs have huge sales. There is even a large gay guide to Japan (sadly only in Japanese) which lists all gay establishments and rates them according to the types of guys you are likely to find there. Japanese not interested in real sex? No way!

After replying to the post (the paragraph above), I found an identical article in London's Daily Telegraph of 13 January. The point the Ministry of Health spokesman was making is that the Japanese population is declining at an alarming rate because the birthrate has been falling for decades. The spokesman then quotes questionable figures to deduce that young people are not interested in having sex. This is complete nonsense. The popularity of marriage is declining with recently emancipated women spending more time enjoying their new-found wealth, and salarymen unwilling to commit to a lifetime of heavy payments on finding a tiny home and bringing up a family. The fact is the Japanese indulge in sex as much as anyone. It's just that it is far more casual than it ever was before.
According to the survey of 671 men and 869 women, issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 35.1 per cent of men aged 16 to 19 said they are not interested in or averse to sex, more than double the 17.5 per cent of men in the previous study in 2008. "Obviously, the most important reason for Japan's declining birth rate is that people are not having sex," Dr. Kunio Kitamura, head of the Japan Family Planning Association, told The Daily Telegraph. "Combined with the rising number of elderly people, this population imbalance is a major problem," he said.

I think fountainhall made a perfect analysis. They are very much interested in sex, same as any other country in the world.

But there is a strange trend in Japan which may cause some misunderstanding. For young Japanese men it is considered cool not to be manly. Macho or hairy men are far out of today’s fashion. Thus “I’m not interested in sex” is a cool statement. “Herbivorous” is their favorite expression. I have to say this trend is for straights only, not gays. Quite a lot of Japanese gays love big and muscular men. Even herbivorous gays love Colt guys.

They do a roaring trade! There is even a street in the heart of Shibuya, one of the trendiest - and therefore most expensive - districts in Tokyo, called Love Hotel Hill (Dogenzaka). It has nothing but short-time hotels!

I do think that Thailand's gay gogo bar owners should take a look at the Japanese love hotels to note how they have adapted to the changing nature and desires of their clientele. There is now even a "Love Hotel Lovers” website! In the men’s magazines about love hotels, hotel listings are categorized by whether they will appeal to OL’s (the better-paid office ladies), female college students or high school girls!

Perhaps that is why so many Japanese men are seen openly masturbating on trains on the way to work!

So many? I looked at the video. There was a grand total of one.
