Thai Parliament Elects Srettha as Prime Minister

Post by Gaybutton »

No surprise there. Imagine that, Parliament elects Srettha on the very day Thaksin returns to Thailand. Why, what a coincidence . . .

Like it or not, he will very soon take office. I hope his administration will be favorable for expats, will get things done the right way, and will be a positive change for Thailand. Many of us are disappointed about what happened with Pita, but since it didn't work out that way, I'm in favor of giving him his chance before forming opinions about him. Personally, I know almost nothing about him and have no idea what to expect.

The joint sitting of the House and the Senate on Tuesday evening elected the Pheu Thai Party's Srettha Thavisin the 30th prime minister of Thailand with 482 votes for and 165 votes against him and 81 abstentions.

There are 500 elected House representatives and currently 249 appointed senators. Mr Srettha needed a simple majority of 375 votes. In the parliament, 728 were present, meeting the needed quorum.

Of the 482 votes for Mr Srettha, 330 are House representatives and 152 are senators. Of the 164 votes against him, 152 votes are representatives and 12 are senators. The 81 abstentions were 13 representatives and 68 senators.

The parliamentary session for the prime ministerial vote started late Tuesday morning. About 11am, Pheu Thai leader Cholnan Srikaew nominated Mr Srettha, a property tycoon, as the sole prime ministerial candidate and the debate involving elected representatives and appointed senators on Mr Srettha's qualifications for the job followed.

Many parliamentarians said Mr Srettha should have attended the session to introduce himself and his policies and clarify allegations made against him, because he was nominated for a very important position in national administration.

Some parliamentarians voiced concerns about accusations of tax avoidance in land purchases by property developer Sansiri Plc when Mr Srettha was still chief executive of the company.

Senator Wiwat Saengsuriyachat said he had little knowledge about Mr Srettha and the Pheu Thai Party had not distributed a written profile of their candidate to parliamentarians before the prime ministerial nomination.

"I have only seen news reports about him and there were many accusations against him," Mr Wiwat said.

Suratin Pijarn, leader of the New Democracy Party, said he did not know details about Mr Srettha and was aware only that the prime ministerial candidate "built houses for sale".

"Will we have to vote for a prime minister as if we are buying a product online?" he said.

He also asked how the Pheu Thai Party would fund its 560-billion-baht digital wallet policy. He doubted he country could afford it, given its present financial status.

Senator Gen Lertrat Ratanawanit said he recognised Mr Srettha's performance in running Sansiri Plc but Mr Srettha should clarify the allegations against him.

At 2.50pm Pheu Thai leader Cholnan said his party was aware of the allegations against Mr Srettha, but its legal team had already investigated them and found no evidence proving that Mr Srettha had violated any law.

"The allegations have not been proved. So, Mr Srettha is considered as being innocent and honest," Dr Cholnan said.

Parliament President Wan Muhamad Noor Matha ended the debate on Mr Srettha's qualifications at 3.11pm and started the voting by calling the names of individual elected MPs and senators.

The voting results were announced about 5.40pm.

Parliament President Wan will propose the prime minister-elect for royal approval.

Who is Srettha?

First, if you were not aware of it, Srettha is a member of the Pheu Thai party - Thaksin's party. And like Thaksin, Srettha is super rich. So, I do find it very interesting that Srettha would be elected Prime Minister on the same day Thaksin returned to Thailand. Coincidence? It does not escape notice that Thaksin is still highly popular among a significant portion of the Thai population. Just how much influence, if any, Thaksin will have over Srettha remains to be seen

Srettha now faces a difficult task of winning the hearts and minds of the people considering the overwhelming landslide vote for Pita who lost being named Prime Minister due to the machinations of a small handful of un-elected, militarily appointed senators.

This first article was published July 22, but goes into depth as to who Srettha is and what he purports to stand for.

In-Depth: Who is Srettha Thavisin, Thai Prime Minister Candidate

By Adam Judd

22 July, 2023

With events earlier this week firmly removing charismatic and popular Prime Minister candidate Pita Limjaroenrat from the Move Forward Party from the running as the next Thai PM, we wanted to profile the most likely candidate to be put forward for a vote between the joint Thai Parliament.

That individual is almost certain to be Srettha Thavisin, a successful and well-regarded Thai businessman from the Pheu Thai party. He is also, however, a relative newcomer to politics. Move Forward Party confirmed earlier this week that Pheu Thai would be taking the lead in forming a new Thai government after the bid from Pita failed.

We know many of our readers have heard of the other possible PM candidates like Pita, Anutin, and Prawit for some time but Srettha is unfamiliar to many of our readers at TPN Media so here is a profile on him and a bit about his views.

Srettha Thavisin is a Thai politician and real estate developer who is one of the prime ministerial candidates of the Pheu Thai Party in the 2023 Thai general election. He was born on the 15th of February, 1963 in Bangkok, Thailand, and has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Chulalongkorn University and a Masters of Business Administration from Claremont Graduate University, United States.

Srettha co-founded Sansiri in 1988, which became one of the largest real estate developers in Thailand, and served as its chief executive and president until he resigned in April of 2023 to pursue his political career. He is a known confidant of both Thaksin Shinawatra and Yingluck Shinawatra, former and now exiled prime ministers of Thailand, and is seen as a pro-democracy and pro-reform candidate. He is married to Pakpilai Thavisin, a specialist in anti-aging medicine, with whom he has three children. He is also a collector of classic travel trunks, such as those made by Louis Vuitton.

Under Thavisin’s leadership, Sansiri expanded domestically and internationally, establishing itself as a renowned name in the real estate market. Thavisin went on to also establish MQDC (Magnolia Quality Development Corporation), a subsidiary of the Sansiri Group. MQDC is dedicated to developing sustainable properties that focus on the well-being and happiness of residents while ensuring minimal impact on the environment.

Thavisin’s influence is not limited to business ventures; he also actively contributed to the betterment of society. As a philanthropist, he established the Sansiri Foundation, which supports educational initiatives and the well-being of underprivileged children and communities. Through his foundation, Thavisin strived to make a positive impact on society, emphasizing the importance of education, health, and social responsibility.

Some of the political views of Srettha Thavisin are:

* He wants to settle the political issues that have divided Thailand for decades, such as the role of the monarchy, the military, and the Shinawatra family. He believes that dialogue and compromise are needed to achieve national reconciliation and stability. He currently, however, is against amending the Lese Majeste law although his views on this appear to have changed. With Pita’s rejection as PM despite winning the popular vote of the people being primarily due to his support of amending the Lese Majeste laws this is a major issue.
*He overall supports the pro-democracy and pro-reform movement that have been protesting against the military-backed government and demanding constitutional changes. However, he is more moderate than Pita and does not support the most extreme protesters that have called for monarchy reform, with his focus being on the economy and economic reform to build better equality.
* He advocates for a more decentralized and participatory system of governance, where local communities have more autonomy and power to manage their own affairs. He also wants to promote social welfare and environmental protection.
* He is a confidant of both Thaksin Shinawatra and Yingluck Shinawatra, former prime ministers of Thailand who were ousted by coups and live in exile. He shares their vision of a more inclusive and progressive Thailand that respects human rights and democracy.

Srettha’s political journey began when he joined the Pheu Thai Party in October 2022. Srettha was also appointed as the party’s deputy leader and economic chief.

In April 2023, Srettha announced his resignation from Sansiri, amid speculation that he would be officially named as one of the prime ministerial candidates of the Pheu Thai Party. He said that he wanted to dedicate his full time and energy to serving the country and the people. He also said that he had no conflict of interest with his former business, and that he would not use his wealth or influence to gain an unfair advantage in politics.

Srettha eventually became one of the three prime ministerial candidates of the Pheu Thai Party, alongside Thaksin’s youngest daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and former Attorney General Chaikasem Nitisiri. He ran under the slogan “Srettha for Thailand”, promising to bring economic recovery, social justice, and national reconciliation to the country. He also pledged to respect the constitution and the monarchy, and to work with all parties for the common good.

Srettha Thavisin is a man who has achieved success in both business and politics, and who has a vision of a more inclusive and progressive Thailand that respects human rights and democracy. He is also a man who faces many challenges and uncertainties, as he tries to navigate the complex and polarized political landscape of Thailand. He is a man who could be Thailand’s next prime minister, or who could be denied the opportunity by the military-backed Senate establishment. He is a man who has a lot at stake, and who has a lot to offer to his country.

Srettha from Pheu Thai Secures Parliamentary Victory to Become Thailand’s Next PM

By Tanakorn Panyadee

22 August, 2023

Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Ministerial candidate from the Pheu Thai Party, has won the bicameral vote in Thai Parliament to become the country’s next prime minister.

Srettha, who is also a property tycoon and a neophyte to politics, was the sole premier candidate for the third prime ministerial vote arranged today, August 22nd.

The vote came after the first two votes saw the leader of the election-winning Move Forward Party, Pita Limjaroenrat, fail to become prime minister due to his inability to gain sufficient support from the Senate, which is composed of 250 junta-appointed senators.

Seeing that the Move Forward Party could not back its leader to take on the country’s leadership role mainly due to its refusal to back down on the controversial proposed amendment to the royal defamation law (lese majeste), the Pheu Thai Party decided to break away from the old coalition to ally with parties mostly from the former government camps.

The new Pheu Thai-led coalition consists of 314 MPs from 11 parties, including the military-backed Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, which backed coup-maker former Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, and the Palang Pracharath Party, which supported former Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan.

The inclusion of these two parties into the coalition prompted its old partner, Move Forward, to refuse to vote for Srettha, citing that it contradicted the Thai people’s mandate given in the general election.

However, all in all, Srettha was able to secure the parliamentary victory with 482 votes in favor, 164 votes against, and 81 abstentions.

The threshold is half of the parliament which is 375 votes, thus Srettha is now officially Thailand’s next Prime Minister.

Srettha along with Pheu Thai has important policies that they have pledged to implement including:

Economic policies:

* Implement the 10,000 baht digital wallet policy.
* Raise the daily minimum wage to 600 baht by 2027.
* Raise the starting wage for new graduates to 25,000 baht per month.
* Replace mandatory military conscription with a voluntary system (the policy belonged to Move Forward, but Pheu Thai swore to pursue this policy after the breakup).
* Elevate crop prices.

Social policies:

* Resolve the separatist conflict in the southernmost provinces.
* Pursue medical marijuana initiatives.

Political reforms:

* Amend the charter to enhance its democratic nature and eliminate corruption while leave the sections pertaining to the royal institution untouched.

Probably a small step in a better direction, but definitely not the giant step forward Thailand would have had under Pita's leadership.

It will be interesting to see the Generals next moves... :?

Total guess and opinion on my part, with no supporting evidence of any kind: If Thaksin's request for a Royal Pardon does not succeed, I think their next move(s) will be trying to do whatever it takes to get Thaksin released. I think at least for the time being they will be focused on Thaksin far more than any other issues. I think even those who were involved in ousting him will be trying to get him released.

Image

Take a good look at the photo. Here is Thaksin, a convicted and sentenced criminal on his way to prison, and yet there are the police clearly saluting him. Maybe some might disagree, but to me that photo tells me what I need to know. Instead of sending him off to jail, why not just give him a New York style ticker tape parade?

And is that long line of escort vehicles really necessary to ensure his security? I just think the chances that he will remain in prison for very long are virtually nil.

Other than possibly making things more difficult for expats on the retirement visa, you know what changes I am expecting? None. Zero. Nada. I hope I'm totally wrong and things will improve for everyone, Thai and farang, but I'm not holding my breath. I am more inclined to think it will be another example of "everything changes, but nothing changes."

Let's see what, if anything, happens involving same sex marriage, legalizing prostitution, ending military conscription, and effectively stopping high level corruption - four issues proposed and discussed. If there is good movement on those issues, that would definitely change the way I'm thinking.
