The news is reporting there are now over 60,000 cases in Thailand and spreading rapidly. It can't hurt to protect yourself as best as you can

If any board members were of a certain age and/or have health conditions, getting one or two vaccine boosters per year seems like a very good idea. Preferably an updated vaccine.

There is no recommendation for boosters for my age group, in either the UK or Germany. Being only just outside the recommended age for Germany, I still wouldn't rule out getting one occasionally. The one thing that would increase my risk is enjoying intimate contact with numerous boys in Thailand.

I'm not going to stop that. It didn't stop me in 2020, before I even had any vaccine & it's not going to stop me now.

I qualify for a booster every six months in the UK and I've kept up-to-date with them. Nom will join me in Pattaya in a couple of weeks and I expect he'll be wearing a mask even if most people aren't. Sadly all the jabs and wearing a mask haven't prevented him from catching Covid twice. This last time was really worrying as he was very ill but seems to be over the worst now. I've been unable to find out from him what drugs he was prescribed but should be able to soon. He went to clinics in both Bangkok and Ratchaburi.

The article notes that in Thailand between January and now, so far, among the thousands of cases, there has been 46 deaths. Please be careful, folks. I don't want anyone - including me - to end up becoming number 47.

Covid-19 cases top 53,500 a week, Bangkok most infected

May 26, 2025

There were 53,563 Covid-19 cases reported in Thailand last week, with five deaths, and Bangkok had the most infections, according to the Department of Disease Control.

The department reported the 53,563 cases were recorded from May 18 to 24. Of the cases, 2,827 were inpatients and 50,736 outpatients.

Patients aged 30-39 years old formed the biggest group, 10,740, followed by 20-29 (9,527), 60 and over (8,107) and 4,117 young children aged up to four years.

Last week Bangkok had the most cases, 9,539, followed by Chon Buri (3,379), Samut Prakan (2,491), Nonthaburi (2,278) and Rayong (2,210).

In Samut Prakan, rising covid-19 cases caused Ratwinit Bangkaeo School in Bang Phli district to switch to online teaching from Monday to Wednesday.

The move was announced by the secondary school's management on its website, which said it was aimed at student safety.

Nationwide, from Jan 1 to May 26 there were 186,955 covid-19 cases reported in Thailand, with 46 deaths.

I'm not disagreeing with you. But:

The annual death rate in Thailand from all causes is about 9 per 1000
I make that about 1768 people per day.
Compare with about 0.21 people per day from Covid.

Obviously people of a certain age might like to check vaccine booster recommendations in developed countries & ensure they get the same in Thailand.
Once that has been done, there are plenty of other things to be worried about ahead of Covid.

I'd bet money that higher causes of death include not wearing a helmet on motorcycles, not wearing a seatbelt, smoking, eating too much and drinking too much. It still doesn't stop people. I confess to at least one of those.

An older relative also just had that in the UK. It says JN.1 on the paperwork.

Covid drug output boosted as cases surge in Thailand

Government Pharmaceutical Organisation steps up antiviral distribution across country

May 27, 2025

The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) has accelerated the production of the antiviral drugs favipiravir and molnupiravir in response to the rising number of Covid-19 infections in Thailand.

The dominant strain currently spreading in the country is JN1, which is highly transmissible even among those previously infected, GPO director Mingkwan Suphanpong said on Tuesday. Those who have been infected hardly realise it, he said, as the symptoms are very mild.

The increase in cases is partly due to public gatherings and the rainy season, with Covid-19 now considered an endemic disease.

Officials said on Monday that 53,597 new cases and five additional deaths had been recorded in Thailand from May 18-24, bringing total fatalities this year to 46.

Since early May, the GPO has produced 1.75 million favipiravir pills and 3.36 million molnupiravir capsules.

The distribution process has been expedited since May 23, with deliveries to 13 hospitals in Bangkok and adjacent provinces on May 24 and to 315 medical facilities nationwide on Monday.

Additional supplies will be distributed on Wednesday and early next week.

The GPO has also procured more raw materials for medicine production and to store for emergencies. Production plans will be adjusted according to the situation, it said.

Dr Mingkwan also advised the public to wear masks in crowded or poorly-ventilated areas, wash hands regularly, avoid touching the face unnecessarily and isolate or seek medical care if symptoms develop.

Those whose symptoms become severe should seek medical treatment immediately, she added.

Virologist Yong Poovorawan said that while Covid-19 cases this year are likely to exceed last year’s total, the disease has become seasonal and less severe, with fewer fatalities. As a result, many patients prefer to treat themselves at home.

“As predicted, the Covid-19 surge would peak when the new school term begins and would decline from late next month through July,” said Dr Yong, from the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University.

He predicted influenza and other respiratory viruses like rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) would follow the Covid outbreaks from July to November.

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin said that medication and medical supplies for Covid-19 are sufficient, no school closures are planned, and only screenings are needed.

However, vulnerable groups remain at risk, he added.

Thailand logged 65k new Covid cases, 3 deaths last week: health minister

by Apinya Wipatayotin

June 2, 2025

Thailand recorded 65,880 Covid-19 cases and three deaths in the last week of May but the outbreak was waning from its yearly peak, according to the public health minister.

Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said on Monday that the new cases and fatalities were recorded from May 25 to 31.

People aged 30-39 formed the biggest group of new cases, 12,403, followed by 10,368 in their 20s and 9,590 aged 60 and over. The disease was spreading naturally in the rainy season, the minister said.

“People may be shocked with the five-digit number of new cases and I have told medical personnel to be prepared to handle the situation… However, the Division of Epidemiology reported that the outbreak has started to wane and its peak already passed,” Mr Somsak said. He did not elaborate on the peak of the outbreak this year.

The minister advised people to protect themselves by wearing face masks in risky or crowded areas, conducting self-tests to prevent unintentional transmission to vulnerable people, regularly washing hands, eating cooked food and refraining from touching faces, eyes, noses and mouths.

He said he ordered medical personnel to prepare enough medicine and medical supplies for patients and vulnerable people.

Mr Somsak said that influenza cases were also declining. The biggest group of flu patients was in the age range of five to nine years and the highest fatalities were among elderly patients and those with underlying diseases, the health minister said.

Good going Dale.

I'm getting mine in a few weeks.

And don't worry about the sore arm. The more we age - the more things hurt. Jai and I had fun last night and I'm still hobbling around like Walter Brennan...LOL
