Airport hotel ready to provide a softer landing
The country's first "sleep box" hotel will have its soft launch tomorrow at Don Mueang airport, its director Petch Chancharoen revealed yesterday.a place to crash:
Mr Petch said five sleep box rooms will be available for tomorrow's opening. The hotel will be fully opened, offering all 25 rooms for daytime and overnight stays, at the end of the month.
He said the sleep cabins, with an en suite bathroom, are located in the airport's landside area on the fourth floor of Terminal 2.
"The sleep box hotel is aimed at serving passengers who need a short rest. Guests will be charged 1,000 baht for the first three hours. Compared with 400 baht per hour [charged by similar-sized accommodations] in Japan, our room rates are the cheapest," he said.
Mr Petch said with the sleep box rooms, customers waiting to board their planes will have both convenience and safety.
A stay at the hotel is ideal for people checking in for early morning flights out of Don Mueang, which begin as early as 3am.
According to Natveena Lomsap, director of group marketing communications at Miracle Group, which operates the hotel, the sleep box rooms at Don Mueang airport are partitioned into five sections, each consisting of five, 15 square metre rooms.
Each room, equipped with a five-foot-wide bed and a private toilet, can accommodate two guests. A television and Wi-Fi are also provided.
Room rates for the first three hours are 1,000 baht and 200 baht for each subsequent hour. Customers are also provided with food coupons.
Customers who stay from 9pm to 6am the next morning will be charged a flat rate of 1,800 baht while those who stay only an hour will be charged 300 baht with towels and bathroom amenities provided free of charge.
"The sleep box hotel at Don Mueang airport is the first of its kind in the country and the Asean region," Ms Natveena said.
"At other airports, including Suvarnabhumi, full-service hotel rooms are available in the airside area, allowing passengers to rest while waiting to board their onward flights."
She said the concept of the sleep box hotel was based on the preference of Thai customers who wanted a room with en suite toilets.
The sleep cabins are also designed to deliver the same standard of comfort as rooms in full-service hotels.
Customers are charged an average 470 baht for the first two hours and 150 baht for each subsequent hour at capsule hotels with no en suite bathroom at airports in Japan.
Customers of Japanese capsule hotels are also made to pay an additional 300 baht to take a shower.

Short time rooms in downtown Bangkok are much less expansive and they usually come with a nice companion as a (paid) bonus

Even less expansive than a box? Spelling doesn't matter often, but here it really does.ilz wrote:Short time rooms in downtown Bangkok are much less expansive
But on topic, I think it's an interesting offer for certain situations, good to keep that in mind.
Re: Convenient rooms at Don Muang
In all seriousness, surely this kind of room is only an option for those who need to stay a few hours between connecting flights ?
As Don Muang has a lot of low cost airline point to point flights, I presume the majority of travellers here will be able to configure trips that do not require such compromises over accommodation. For the remainder, this might be a nice option.
All those flights connecting in Dubai & so on might be much more palatable if there were keenly priced rooms like this. I didn't think Don Muang was that type of hub though.

Re: Convenient rooms at Don Muang
Well, if it's slightly cheaper than the same service in Japan, that means it's horribly expensive in Thailand!Guests will be charged 1,000 baht for the first three hours. Compared with 400 baht per hour [charged by similar-sized accommodations] in Japan, our room rates are the cheapest
If you arrive at such hours at the airport, that means taxi into town into a real hotel will be fast.if your flight is at some odd hour
Good luck with their business idea, but count met out!
