City scraps Khao San, Silom fetes

April 5, 2019

Khao San and Silom roads will remain open during the Songkran festival this year, but won't host any entertainment shows and events, according to City Hall.

The Songkran organisers' decision not to hold any events on the two roads to celebrate the festival this year is in light of the preparations for His Majesty the King's coronation from May 4-6, which is only a month away.

City clerk Sinlapasuai Sawisaengsun said on Thursday the two roads will still be open to Songkran revellers. They will be free to splash water but there will be no celebratory entertainment.

The Songkran long weekend is from April 13 to 16. City Hall has prohibited the use of high-pressure water guns and the consumption of alcohol at the celebration venues.

The festival will take place between April 11 and 14 in the Thai traditional theme at Lumpini Park, which is close to Silom Road. The sacred Phra Buddha Sihing Buddha statue will be brought from the Phutthaisawan Throne Hall and moved around the city for the public to pay their respects during the Songkran period.

Meanwhile, Nok Air plans to end flights between Bangkok and Nan after the Songkran festival, according to Nan airport general manager Ruangyuth Nittayanon.

He said on Thursday the airport has been notified by the budget airline of its decision to stop flying the route from April 18, after more than one year in service.

Nok Air, which is operating at a loss, did not explain the reason, he added.

Sounds good to me, but why limit it to Songkran? I'd like to see the speeders and drunk drivers made to realize they will be charged with murder any time if someone dies at their irresponsible hands. In the USA it's called Vehicular Homicide.

According to the article, "Traffic accidents killed 20,169 people in Thailand last year." That averages to 55 people per day.

Speeding, drunk drivers face murder rap over Songkran

by Wassana Nanuam

April 6, 2019

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon says he has ordered police to charge speeding and drunk motorists who cause fatal accidents during the Songkran holiday with murder.

"I am worried that speeding and drink driving can kill others. We must try to reduce deaths from these causes. So, anyone who violates speed limits or drives under the influence and causes death will be held responsible for murder," Gen Prawit said at the Defence Ministry on Friday.

The new measure would add to other measures earlier introduced to boost road safety during Songkran, he said. Other measures include impounding the vehicles of drunk drivers.

He did confirm that Songkran revellers will be allowed to travel around on the back of pickup trucks as usual.

"Let it go for now," said Gen Prawit, who is also the defence minister.

Despite the intense road safety campaign for the Songkran festival in April last year, there were still 3,724 traffic accidents, which killed 418 people and injured 3,897 others. Speeding and drink driving were cited as the most common causes.

Traffic accidents killed 20,169 people in Thailand last year, according to official statistics.

Well, the alcohol ban didn't happen.
The committee proposing it were only proposing it only for Songkran day the 13th of April but conceded that time was too short to implement it this year.
So be warned they could well bring it up again next year.
