Taiwan: Gay Marriage Law Passes in Parliament

Post by fountainhall »

At last, it is fact. Two years after Taiwan's Supreme Court informed the government that it must introduce a gay marriage law by the end of May 2019. today Taiwan's parliament passed a bill into law. The new law will go into effect from next Friday.

Last ditch attempts by conservatives to veto the bill failed. Three bills had been put before parliament of which two omitted the word 'marriage'. These also failed. The new law which permits same-sex couples to form "exclusive permanent unions" and apply for "marriage registration" passed comfortably.

Congratulations to all the campaigners in Taiwan who had actively worked hard on this issue for many years, Let's hope some other countries quickly follow suit.
