Pattaya police tell motorbike operators to strictly monitor Arab bike renters

by THE NATION

August 7, 2023

The Pattaya police on Monday told operators of rented motorbike operators to strictly keep records and identity documents of their Arab customers for police to check following repeated complaints of road disturbances caused by Arab road racers.

After hearing complaints of road racing and disturbances from local residents for months, Pattaya Police chief Pol Colonel Thanapong Phothi held a meeting with rented motorcycle operators at the police station on Monday.

Tourist police, immigration police, and Interior Ministry officials based in Pattaya also attended the meeting.

Thanapong told the operators to check the driving licences and passports of their customers before allowing them to rent motorbikes. The operators are also required to keep copies of documents to check in case the bikers created road disturbances.

Thanapong added that the operators were told to firmly remind their customers to respect traffic laws and to wear crash helmets while riding.

Local residents have been complaining that Arab tourists, especially Kuwaiti young men, race motorbikes on roads and rev up their engines to make loud noises in the early hours of the day, disrupting their sleep.

On July 31, Pattaya police conducted a raid on a group of Kuwatis at 1am and confiscated 15 motorcycles for disturbing traffic on Yen Sabai Road in Bang Lamung district of Chonburi province.

Local commuters said that they could not use the thoroughfare because the gang had parked their motorbikes in such a way as to block the road entrance as well as people’s homes. The gangs often travelled in groups and revved up their engines loudly.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Pol Lt-Colonel Arus Sapanon, from Pattaya tourist police, said police have informed the embassies of the countries from where the road racers came so that the tourists would be reminded to respect Thai traffic law.

Arus said in some cases, tourists who did not have a driving licence, had used their friends’ documents to rent the bikes.

With many photos showing dozens of motorbike maniacs, along with the ones I have witnessed myself, and I'm talking about for years, I have never seen any of them wearing a helmet.

There has been quite a bit of publicity lately about this in all the English language media - telling us all about how the police are cracking down on both the maniacs and the outfits that rent the motorbikes to them.

I'd like to hear from those of you who have been in that area over the past few days. Is the "crackdown" working or is it all still the same as usual?

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it takes much to figure out which one it likely will turn out to be . . .

I fear GB is right, nothing is likely to change. However, if the powers that be seriously want to stop the problem simply tell the motorbike rental shops if your bike is stopped with an unlicensed driver you forfeit the bike no ands ifs or buts!

I visited the Soi Yensabai area this morning...nothing new...hordes of Arabs blocking the sois with their motorbikes...creating bottlenecks on Soi VC and the Wat Chai area as well.

They were swarming...smiling all the way.

Hurray for the BIB!

The only surprise for me would have been if anything was different.

If you're going to have a crackdown, then have a crackdown, but don't be giving us all this nonsense about a crackdown and yet nothing changes.

Where corruption rules, surely a "crackdown" is often a big show, combined with as little action as they can get away with ?

Whether it be policing in Yensabai, fixing pollution, reducing road traffic fatalities or dealing with immigration offences.

In this case, they pull pointless stunts like meeting the Kuwaiti ambassador, instead of mass arrests, prosecution and jail. As mentioned earlier, the penalties for racing on the roads in Thailand appear to be sufficient to do the job.

Arab bikers block rescuers from taking injured rider to Pattaya hospital

by THE NATION

August 10, 2023

Dozens of Arab tourists riding motorbikes initially blocked a rescue operation for one of their peers who was injured in a road accident in Pattaya early Wednesday morning, rescue officers said.

Rescuers from the Sawang Boribun Thammasathan Pattaya Foundation rushed to Soi Yensabai in South Pattaya at 4.30am after receiving information of a motorcycle accident.

But the rescuers found the injured Kuwaiti tourist, identified as Ahmad Jraoaalazmi, 22, surrounded by dozens of Arab friends, all believed to be his compatriots.

The rescuers said the bikers initially refused to allow them to take the injured tourist to a hospital, apparently misunderstanding that he would be apprehended by police.

The Arab bikers allowed the rescuers to carry the injured man into an ambulance and rush him to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital after the rescuers explained to them that they were there to take their friend for medical attention.

However, the dozens of young men crowding the area made the rescue operation hectic.

During the operation, the young men, referred to by residents as the Kuwaiti gang almost filled the soi.

A Myanmar worker, Wai, 30, later told police later that he saw the biker fall while riding his motorbike along the soi. His friends then rushed to surround him while waiting for an ambulance.

Local people and commuters have complained to Pattaya police that large Kuwaiti gangs are riding their bikes and blocking Pattaya roads at night. The gangs often travel in groups and rev their engines loudly, disrupting the sleep of local residents, and park their bikes to block off roads.

On Monday, Pattaya police held a meeting to discuss measures for dealing with the increasing number of Arab motorcyclists on Pattaya roads. The operators of rented motorcycles were told to check driving licenses and passports of renters and to warn them to observe Thai traffic laws.

Isn't that great? Either they can't tell the difference between an ambulance and a police vehicle. And if they think the police are about to arrest one of them, they're actually going to try to block the police from doing so. They are going to resist arrest and facilitate others of their gang to resist arrest if that's what they think is happening. Every one of them should be arrested for doing that.

The paramedics should have said, "Fine with us. We'll be happy to just leave him here to deal with his injuries himself or you fine folks handle getting him medical attention yourselves." And I wonder if he is going to pay for that medical attention.

We all know this has been going on for years and this year the problem has significantly escalated. And yet the authorities seem to be doing nothing effective to stop it.

It's "hair tearingly" frustrating, even just watching the show from the sidelines. If they don't do something dramatic to put a stop to it, what do they think will happen next year and the years after that?

I hope to see some real action done about this very soon. And so do the local businesses and anyone who wants to go to Sunee Plaza, but based on what the authorities have done so far, I'm not holding my breath. I wonder how much longer letting these people just run amok in their city is going to be tolerated. And lord help us if similar groups from other countries see nothing effective is being done and decide to start going to Pattaya to be doing the same thing.

And "Big Joke" is focused on US? What's wrong with this picture?

This already has had a Top 10 spot on my "I Don't Get It" list for years.

Here is the Pattaya News video report about the same incident Undaunted reported above:

They would probably need army back up to move in on this lot. Even then, they could only reasonably arrest the ones doing anything illegal.

I suspect it's "too difficult".
