Surely this must be due to the payment of a modest sum of tea money ?

Farang, on the other hand, who get caught overstaying have a great deal to lose and they find themselves in big trouble.
What happens to the boys is far more interesting, since most of us are not planning overstay at all & certainly not a long term one.

It used to be all over the local news when police raids would yield boy arrests. Now it's rare to see such news. Most of the time when these raids do make the news, it's the girlie and hetero bars - usually because they were caught staying open beyond legal hours, not having the proper licensing and paperwork, drugs, and under-age customers. Staying open beyond legal hours is what often provokes the raids. I suppose failing to come up with tea money can provoke raids too. Most of the time it's the owners and managers that get arrested - usually not the staff, although sometimes staff and customers do get arrested, especially if they fail drug tests and/or are under-age.

I don't know what happens to them after getting arrested because the local news almost never publishes follow-up stories

Let's speculate on why.

Even if the local news had the information to report something like "Case closed, following payment of xxx,xxx in tea money", they could hardly report it without making themselves into a target for the brown shirt mafia.
