UK Photocard Driving Licenses

Post by Jun »

Whilst UK driving license are valid from the day we pass our test until 70, they added the photocard license, which needs to be renewed every 10 years.
I just received the reminder letter to renew this. By post and about 45 days before expiry. I'm only at home due to family issues, which have delayed my holiday by a few weeks.

In a normal year, I'd be off in Thailand when this arrives and when returning, a few months later, my licence would be expired & I wouldn't legally be able to drive until submitting an application for a new license.
So I think the lesson is to check the post carefully when returning home.

Their clunky webshite* hasn't actually asked me to upload a new photo either. Which makes me wonder what the point of this is. I suspect they might use my passport photo, which is already 4 years old.
[*Typo, but deserved]

Also, your IDP for driving in Thailand will only be valid up to the date of expiry of your photocard driving license. I'm not that bothered about driving on my next Thai trip. Anyone who is can't extend an IDP until the new photocard license arrives.
