“Big Joke” Launches Campaign in Pattaya to Collect Signatures for Removal of Anti-Corruption Commission

Thailand’s suspended Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Surachet Hakparn, also known as “Big Joke,” launched a campaign in Pattaya to collect signatures for the removal of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

The campaign, which took place on May 22nd at the J.A. Plus Hotel, aimed to remove the NACC commission who Pol. Gen. Surachet accused of corruption, unexplained wealth, and a serious breach of ethics.

Pol. Gen. Surachet stated that this is the first time in Thai history that such a petition has been filed against an independent organization under Article 236 of the Constitution.

The petition will be submitted to the House Speaker, who will then refer the matter to the courts to appoint an independent committee to investigate the NACC, Pol. Gen. Surachet said.

He added that as of May 22nd, he has already collected over 13,000 signatures. Pol. Gen. Surachet is confident that the petition will reach the required 20,000 signatures within the next few days.

The former deputy national police chief denied that the campaign is politically motivated or a means to avenge the NACC for its bribery probe against him.

The NACC earlier decided to investigate allegations against Big Joke and four other police officers. The allegations focus on claims that they accepted bribes from a gambling website.
