Here's a link to some photos for Bangkok Pride.

By far the majority of the promotional type photos seem to show people in drag or, possibly females.
Of course they should be welcome to participate.

However, I don't see much equality in their coverage. Why not have an equal proportion of boys in the photos ?

I agree. While I am very happy that Thailand and the Thai government is supportive of us, that kind of advertising stereotypes us. While many do enjoy drag shows and some enjoy dressing in drag, that by no means applies to the many of us who are not involved in any way with drag.

I think it is wrong if the average person, gay or straight, equates gay with drag.

'First' as PM set to join Pride

Governor says nation to keep its guard up

by Kuakul Mornkum

May 22, 2014

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin confirmed his participation in Bangkok Pride Festival 2024, marking the first time the country's premier has joined the parade, despite security concerns after a warning was issued by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security.

The two organisations issued a joint release on May 10 warning that foreign terrorist organisations (FTOs) could target events during LGBTQ Pride Month.

The release did not refer to a specific city or particular Pride event that was of heightened concern as a potential target.

"FTOs or supporters may seek to exploit increased gatherings associated with the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month," noted the release.

"FTO efforts to commit or inspire violence against holiday celebrations, including Pride celebrations or LGBTQIA+ related venues, are compounded by the current heightened threat environment in the US and other Western countries."

The release added: "FTOs and their supporters have previously promoted anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric and targeted LGBTQIA+ related events or venues for attacks."

Last June, three alleged ISIS sympathisers were arrested for attempting to attack a Pride parade in Vienna, Austria.

The release noted that an attacker might also attempt to gain access to restricted areas, bypass security, or impersonate law enforcement officials, or make violent threats online, in person or via mail.

"The concern might not be concentrated in this region, but Thailand will keep its guard up over security," said Bangkok deputy governor Sanon Wangsrangboon on Monday.

He said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will be coordinating with the Metropolitan Police Bureau of the Royal Thai Police on securing Pride month activities.

"We are in talks over security issues with the Metropolitan Police Bureau, and we will have a general meeting again on May 27. Moreover, we will discuss the issue with the national security agencies," Mr Sanon said.

Mr Sanon said the BMA and security agencies have experience in securing large events such as the Songkran festival and last year's Pride parade.

Waddao Chumaporn, president and founder of Narumit Pride, the organiser of "Bangkok Pride Festival 2024", said the Bangkok Pride Parade 2024 will be organised under the concept of "Celebration of Love, Celebrating Marriage Equality".

The Pride Parade, considered one of the highlights of the event, will take place on Rama I Road, from the National Stadium to CentralWorld.

Over 200,000 people are expected to participate in Bangkok Pride this year, comprising both Thais and visitors from around the world.

Private sector steps up for a piece of THB230 billion ‘rainbow economy’

Retail giants prepare to embrace gender diversity in Pride month

by THE NATION

May 24, 2024

Thailand’s private sector is gearing up to be a part of Pride month events in June to celebrate equality and rights of gender diversity groups, also known as the LGBTQIAN+.

The organisation of pride activities is in line with the government’s plan of making Thailand a tourist destination with world-class festivals and events under the Ignite Thailand initiative.

Analysts estimate that the rainbow economy, revolving around gender diverse people, could generate up to 230 billion baht revenue per year, thanks to members of LGBTQIAN+ groups who have around 40% more purchasing power than average tourists.

Thanks to the recently approved equal marriage bill, Thailand now has the potential to become Asia’s largest pride destination and landmark, and the fourth biggest in the world, especially if the kingdom is selected to host the World Pride 2030 event, said experts.

Riding on this trend, operators of major shopping centres are planning pride-related events across June to attract visitors to Bangkok and other provinces where pride activities will be hosted.

Central Pattana Plc, operator of Central department stores, recently announced ‘Thailand’s Pride Celebration 2024’ event, to be held at 24 Central shopping malls nationwide.

Held under the concept ”pride for all”, the event aims to celebrate diversity, equality and inclusion throughout the month of June, said chief marketing officer Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana.

He said the main highlight would be the fashion parade, “Rhythm of Pride”, with over 500 celebrities as a part of Bangkok Pride Festival 2024 at Central World shopping mall. Participants will also enjoy concerts, digital art exhibition, and pride market that showcases products designed for LGBTQIAN+ consumers.

Nattakit estimated that Central’s pride activities in June will attract up to 800,000 visitors to Central shopping mall nationwide, increasing from around 520,000 visitors recorded in the same period last year.

Around 160,000 people are expected to participate in the main event at Central World, he added.

Meanwhile, Siam Piwat, the operator of Siam Centre, Siam Discovery, Siam Paragon and Iconsiam malls, announced its “Celebration: Right to Love” campaign throughout June to celebrate Pride month.

Saruntorn Asaves, head of Siam Piwat’s shopping centre business, said the campaign would be a part of Bangkok Pride Festival 2024 to celebrate Thailand becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to approve the equal marriage bill.

“Pride Month activities will help boost the economy and tourism industry in Bangkok, which is the capital of diversity that welcomes visitors of all lifestyles and interests,” he said.

Saruntorn said the celebrations would be held at all shopping malls of Siam Piwat from May 31 to mark Pride month and to welcome participants of Bangkok Pride Parade from around the world on June 1.Meanwhile, Siam Piwat, the operator of Siam Centre, Siam Discovery, Siam Paragon and Iconsiam malls, announced its “Celebration: Right to Love” campaign throughout June to celebrate Pride month.

Saruntorn said the celebrations would be held at all shopping malls of Siam Piwat from May 31 to mark Pride month and to welcome participants of Bangkok Pride Parade from around the world on June 1.

From May 31 to June 4, Siam Paragon will host over 20 seminar with speakers from LGBTQ+ and women’s groups at SCBX Next Tech. Meanwhile, Thailand’s and Asia’s first drag concert festival will be held at Parc Paragon from May 31 to June 3.

Iconsiam will host the Pride Out Loud exhibition from June 1-18 to showcase artworks and art toys by LGBTQ+ and LGBTQ-friendly artists amid the backdrop of rainbow-colour waterfall as part of the mall’s iconic multimedia water show.

According to Gay Time magazine and LGBT Capital, there are about 500 million members of LGBTQIAN+ groups worldwide, 288 million in Asia and about 4 million in Thailand. It is estimated that the population in these groups could grow to 1 billion people by 2050.

Well the figure has gone from 40 times to a very plausible 40%.

Delete a dependent spouse and or offspring and the average person is already at least 40% ahead. That's before we consider whether or not LGBTQ people would do better or worse in careers.

I'm guessing the "40 times" was either a misquote or an erroneous translation.

I am delighted that the Prime Minister not only showed up in support of the parade, but was even wearing a rainbow shirt. Pita was there too. Are there any other countries anywhere near as supportive? It is a far cry, very far cry, from countries where being gay is illegal and the penalty can be death. This world has a very long way to go and I'm happy to be living in a country that is leading the way.

Thailand may have its problems, but thankfully intolerance is not one of them.

Huge Pride parade has extra meaning this year

Thai LGBTQ+ community and supporters look forward to passage of marriage equality bill

June 1, 2024

Rainbow flags filled the streets of Bangkok on Saturday at the start of Pride Month as Thailand inches closer to recognising same-sex marriages.

Thousands of LGBTQ+ revellers and activists gathered for the Bangkok Pride Parade that attracted thousands of participants and spectators along Rama I Road.

“This year’s Pride Parade can be considered one of the biggest because it coincides with the passing of the same-sex marriage bill,” said Avorawan Ramwan, who joined the parade with her partner.

The country is preparing to be the first in Southeast Asia — and just the third in Asia — to legalise same-sex marriage as the marriage equality bill heads for final readings in the Senate later this month.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin also joined the parade, dressed in a rainbow shirt.

“It is a basic right to choose who to love,” he said in a post on the social media platform X.

The bill sailed through the House in March and overwhelmingly passed first reading in the Senate in April. It will have its second and third readings in the upper chamber this month.

“The Senate will likely pass the bill on June 18,” Senator Wallop Tangkananuruk, chairman of the Senate committee on same-sex marriage, told Reuters.

If there are no amendments from the lower house, the government will send it for royal approval, Mr Wallop said, adding that the law would come into force 120 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette.

“Pride events are meaningful, and Thailand is known worldwide as a paradise for the LGBT community. Therefore, we must help promote and advocate for it, as well as implement laws to support the LGBT community,” said transgender woman Aunchanaporn Pilsauta.

Thai PM Leads Bangkok Pride Festival 2024, Highlighting LGBTQIAN+ Support

By Kittisak Phalaharn

2 June, 2024

On May 31st, 2024, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin presided over the Bangkok Pride Festival 2024, organized by Bangkok Pride and the Bangkok Government.

The event saw participation from the LGBTQIAN+ community, both Thai and international, culminating in a grand parade on June 1st along Rama I Road in Pathumwan.

Bangkok Pride is a historic event showcasing the commitment and determination of various groups to elevate the festival to a global level, potentially attracting tourists worldwide. It also highlighted Thailand’s capability to host Bangkok WorldPride 2030.

The parade commenced from the Nimibutr Building at the National Stadium, proceeding along Rama I Road to the Ratchaprasong Intersection, covering a distance of 2.5 kilometers. The festival featured five main parades and 130 sub-parades, displaying the vibrant diversity of LGBTQIAN+ communities.

According to Thai national media, many prominent figures, including Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, Pheu Thai Party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat, and other notable individuals, participated in the parade.

Paetongtarn announced that the Marriage Equality Bill will soon be enacted under Srettha’s government, with broad support from various political parties and the public. She emphasized that love should be recognized and legally supported.

Additionally, the Pheu Thai Party is discussing sex workers’ rights, and advocating for basic rights, including healthcare and welfare, for all professions.

Pita echoed similar sentiments regarding the Marriage Equality Bill, which is set for council consideration in July. He confidently stated that with bipartisan support, the bill would pass without issue.
