Windows 10 Support

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in October, ie no more security updates.

Apparently, you can buy an extended security update for one further year.

Or if you get 1000 points, you can get this for free. Points are accumulated for free if you register and use Bing search. That's an interesting experiment, but I'll be straight back to google searches once I have my 1000 points. If not sooner.

Quite a lot of older PC hardware is deemed unsuitable for Windows 11 by Microsoft, so you need work arounds to install Windows 11.
I'm tempted to give Linux an extended trial.

I will be sticking with Windows 10. It works and with all the updates over the years, I've never noticed any difference. Besides, when I checked, my computer is not compatible with Windows 11 and I'm not about to buy a new computer when the one I have works just the way I like it.

I don't have any idea what Windows 11 is supposed to do, improve, or help any better than my current Windows 10 system.

When it comes to software updates, I think the principle is "If it ain't broke, keep making pointless changes until it is broke".

I can't complain too much.
I bought Windows 7 on the launch date. After a few years, I then had a free upgrade to Windows 10.
With Windows 10, I had to do a few registry edits to eliminate unwanted changes, but after that it was fine. So 16 years for one license fee.

I do online banking and other services. Eventually, I expect they will stop access to such things for Windows 10 users. However, I don't think that will be any time in 2025, as so many people are still on Windows 10.
It's impossible to access some services on Windows 7, so I imagine Windows 10 will end up just like that.

I'm tempted to try Linux after that. Since Microsoft shut Skype and stole my £4 credit, with no refund option, why would I want to do business with a company that desperate for money ?

That's the point. There is nothing wrong with Windows 10 and from what I've read about Windows 11, there is almost nothing that would tempt me to go with it, especially since my computer is not even compatible with it. I truly believe the only reason they came out with Windows 11 has nothing to do with being any major benefit to us, but plenty of benefit for Microsoft when people are forced to buy it. Why else would they stop supporting Windows 10 when people paid for it?

Available for only one extra year? Thanks, but I think I'll just try to survive without it. I can't remember the last time there was a Windows 10 update. Besides, I think many of us already have security programs and don't need it from Microsoft.

I can't remember the last time there was a Windows 10 update.

On my PC, 02 July 2025.

My PC shows 9 quality updates so far in 2025, plus 3 updates of the "Malicious Software Removal Tool".

Also, the Microsoft Defender Anti Virus definitions are updated almost daily. However, I could just switch provider for that if needed.

Not mine. It's been at least a year, maybe more, since I've had any kind of Windows 10 update. But I'm not worried about it. My computer is running just fine. When I have received their updates, I have yet to notice anything different.

My computer is not a brand name computer. My computer repairman is the man who built my computer for me. On the rare occasions when I do have a problem, it's usually hardware, not software. So, if I ever do really need Windows 11 or whatever they'll come up with after that, I'll see if he can make the necessary upgrade for me or build me an entirely new computer if it comes to that.

The only things you need to worry about are security patches and eventually certain websites will refuse to allow you to login. As we see with Windows 7.

I'm surprised your PC has had no updates. I thought it was impossible to turn them off these days.

I assembled my own PC, 9 years ago. No hardware problems so far. I'll probably do another one within 12 months.
