ChatGPT Atlas - new AI browser

Post by Gaybutton »

I don't understand very much yet about AI. This kind of new technology doesn't seem personally useful to me, but then that's what they said about the telephone when it was first invented. Perhaps I simply am missing what AI does.

However it works, so far if it has made any difference to me I haven't noticed it and I don't really see what AI can do for me that my current browser and Google aren't doing already. I use a Windows PC and my smartphone is Android, so this browser is not yet available to me, but once it's available I will certainly be giving it a try to see what difference it makes and what makes it better than currently available browsers. I suppose if this becomes popular, then competitors won't be far behind introducing their own versions.

If someone can explain the benefits and dangers of AI, I'd appreciate it.

ChatGPT Atlas is an AI browser developed by OpenAI. It is based on Chromium and is available on macOS; it is scheduled to be released on Microsoft Windows, iOS and Android in the future.

Introducing ChatGPT Atlas

The browser with ChatGPT built in

October 21, 2025

Today we’re introducing ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser built with ChatGPT at its core.

AI gives us a rare moment to rethink what it means to use the web. Last year, we added search in ChatGPT so you could instantly find timely information from across the internet—and it quickly became one of our most-used features. But your browser is where all of your work, tools, and context come together. A browser built with ChatGPT takes us closer to a true super-assistant that understands your world and helps you achieve your goals.

With Atlas, ChatGPT can come with you anywhere across the web—helping you in the window right where you are, understanding what you’re trying to do, and completing tasks for you, all without copying and pasting or leaving the page. Your ChatGPT memory is built in, so conversations can draw on past chats and details to help you get new things done.

During lectures, I like using practice questions and real-world examples to really understand the material. I used to switch between my slides and ChatGPT, taking screenshots just to ask a question. Now ChatGPT instantly understands what I’m looking at, helping me improve my knowledge checks as I go." — Yogya Kalra, college student and early tester of ChatGPT Atlas

As you use Atlas, ChatGPT can get smarter and more helpful, too. Browser memories let ChatGPT remember context from the sites you visit and bring that context back when you need it. This means you can ask ChatGPT questions like: “Find all the job postings I was looking at last week and create a summary of industry trends so I can prepare for interviews.” Browser memories in Atlas are completely optional, and you’re always in control: you can view or archive them at any time in settings, and deleting browsing history deletes any associated browser memories.

ChatGPT can also do work for you in Atlas using agent mode, with improvements that make it faster and more useful by working with your browsing context. It’s now better at researching and analyzing, automating tasks, and planning events or booking appointments while you browse. Agent mode in Atlas is available today in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users.

ChatGPT Atlas is launching worldwide on macOS today to Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users. Atlas is also available in beta for Business, and if enabled by their plan administrator, for Enterprise and Edu users. Experiences for Windows, iOS, and Android are coming soon.

Download at chatgpt.com/atlas(opens in a new window). Getting started is easy: when you open Atlas for the first time, sign in to ChatGPT and bring your bookmarks, saved passwords, and browsing history with you by importing them from your current browser.

I'm not quite sure where the boundary lies between software & AI.

As for Chat GPT, within the last few weeks, I started using it. From within Firefox, of course. Why would I need a browser to use it ?

Here's an example of what Chat GPT can do:

Thank you Jun. Seems to me Chat GPT is exactly the same as Google AI, which I do use on occasion.

Also, the human brain likes short cuts. So I prefer an answer without the Thai written in Roman characters, so that I get the reading practice.
Instead of manually removing that, all I have to do is ask Chat GPT.

However, AI is not infallible. Many search results seems to be scraping information from elsewhere on the web. They make mistakes.

I asked google AI to check some things about a company. The list of activities included one business which was sold off in 2021.
Also, I heard of them including results from posts made on April the 1st, which most normal intelligence would immediately recognise as April fools.

That part doesn't surprise me. After all, AI is in its infancy, so I think it's too soon to expect totally accurate results.

Never mind the Chat GPT browser, but after only starting recently, I'm very impressed with their normal web page.

Today I asked it to write some google script to for one of my google sheets. The program worked exactly as I wanted. I'm astonished.

No whilst I have written google script before, it has taken a very long time, as I don't know what I'm doing.
About the only time I was proficient in programming was with BASIC at school in the 1980s.

For some friends and family, AI is helpful. The few tries I had very underwhelming.
Sometimes I think AI takes everything that is on the internet and puts it in a blender.
Here a text that I think is written by AI:

https://wanderlog.com/place/details/152 ... -city-hall
Why you should go
1 Experience local administration at work in Preah Sihanouk province
2 Learn about governance structures at the Provincial Hall of Sihanoukville
3 Appreciate efforts towards maintaining safety and security in public spaces
Know before you go
Visit during weekdays for potential opportunities to observe administrative activities

You would think this is a script for a comedy!

Well, it's like all internet sources. The first thing to think about is "how reliable is the answer?"

I see some surprising results. For example google gemini seems to give incorrect answers about how to do things on google sheets.
Ask how to import Singapore stock market data into google sheets and it gives the same answer as is applicable for other countries. Except, it does not work for Singapore, as google are not licensed to use the data like that.

So far, I would trust Chat GPT more than Microsoft Bing. I think I quoted an example where I asked it to translate a word in to Thai and it gave part of the word in Thai and the other part in Chinese. It's difficult to have confidence when a translator cannot even find the correct language.
