I wonder how many Gay Americans will vote Republican this year. Of even more wonder would be the reasons why.

I know a few Log Cabin Republicans, and what they pretend to do is try to change the party from within, but they never do. They are marginalized. The other justification is that they are voting their economic interests over their civil liberties. Those come close to your analogy.

I think you hit the nail on the head on both counts. Trying to change from within is almost always an exercise in futility.
