High Season for Arabs
Like most visitors to Thailand one of the reasons people visit is to escape the weather in their home countries, the Arabs do the same however, other than escaping their horribly oppressive governments they are also escaping their horribly oppressive summers where they can see temperatures 120+ (F) that is why you don't see a huge amount visiting during Thailand's traditional high season. I have just returned home from Central Festival and can happily say inspite of how busy it was today it was burkha free.

I find skinny jeans ( the ones with a drooping crotch) far more offensive particularly when the occupant is cute and denying me the innocent pleasure of observation.. And I'm not that keen on elderly men in vests. Or wearing skimpy swimsuits in Jomtien.
Live and let live. Plenty of things to get upset about What people wear is pretty low on my list.
By the way, the last time I was in Central (ten days ago), my boyfriend tried to add up the number of falangs there....we gave-up after two minutes. There were just too few. MK is his favourite restaurant and it was packed. I was the only falang. It was the same in Hot Pot the night before.

Yes Oliver "Live and let live" providing they aren't my neighbors, been there and done that, I wouldn't wish it on you!

But you forget. I spend three months a year in Pattaya but the rest of the time I am here in London (not the posh part) surrounded by people of all races and creeds. And I wouldn't live anywhere else....and not just because the young guys tend to be cuter than their white counterparts. My road is about 250 metres long and within that short span there must be thirty nationalities, or more accurately people of non -British ancestry, and representatives of all the main religions
A boring anecdote follows. The night that the Brexit vote was announced, a friend and I were dining on the second flood of a decent restaurant on the South Bank (of the Thames, that is , for you non-Londoners). It was such a comfort to watch the crowds of mainly young people crossing Waterloo Bridge- Asians, Africans, Arabs....it was as if London was saying "screw you" to the Little Englanders who hankered after a grey, conforming, parochial past.

Re: High Season for Arabs
As usual Oliver your insight is appreciated however, my experience is limited to renting my house to an Iranian family in the U.S. and now living in a condo in South Pattaya where Arabs are renting many apartments. I am trying to sell my condo as there is a clash of cultures occurring at the moment. The Arab presence where I am is characterized by screaming whores, motorcycles tearing about day and night and garbage left wherever they choose to leave it, as you thrive in a multicultural environment my don't you make me an offer?

Great post Oliver. I spent almost thirty years living in London, having fled the freezing cold Granite City of Aberdeen, and I loved the mix of people in that glorious city. The increase in violent racist and also homophobic attacks since the little englanders won that nonsensical referendum makes me very sad. I moved to live in Thailand five years ago now, and these have been very happy years.

Maybe these Little Englanders as you call them are very wise? They see how Muslim majority country's look like when it comes to gay rights and other freedoms. It doesn't look good. Maybe they are not against immigration, but against immigration from Muslim countries?Oliver wrote:.it was as if London was saying "screw you" to the Little Englanders who hankered after a grey, conforming, parochial past.
What will you say if you are still alive in 2150 and England is Muslim majority and you can't be openly gay anymore, other religions are now underground etc. Will you then say "Maybe it was a bad idea to let so many Muslims in" ? But then it is too late. Maybe these Little Englanders are far smarter than you? Have their eyes also on the future and take into account what we can know now? And with the information we have now it is only wise to fear a Muslim majority.
But maybe in a few decades Muslims will secularize rapidly, as we have done since the 1960's and then there is no issue. But it is a risk to assume that will happen. You have to make policy on what you reasonably can know now. Until that time it is very wise to want less Muslim immigration.

Based on the current abysmal track record, we should go for zero Muslim immigration.thaifarang wrote:But maybe in a few decades Muslims will secularize rapidly, as we have done since the 1960's and then there is no issue. But on this forum are some very left wing people (I mean people who not only disagree with a right winger, but hate them; people who hate people who think different, they are on this forum!). They can not handle statements like that, so I formulated it less severe.
If it is up to me then indeed zero Muslim immigration.

I agree with you more than you will ever know, as for those that think different why do you feel you must accomidate them by being politically correct?thaifarang wrote:I agree 100%.Jun wrote:Based on the current abysmal track record, we should go for zero Muslim immigration.thaifarang wrote:But maybe in a few decades Muslims will secularize rapidly, as we have done since the 1960's and then there is no issue.
