This doesn't have the makings of being one of Gaybutton Thai's more intellectual threads but I'm curiously drawn to it nevertheless.

Not long ago somebody asked why a word sometimes used to describe Sunee was sleazy, and wondered what that meant. The general consensus being that Sunee is/was sleazy in comparison to either Boystown or Jomtien complex (maybe Bangkok has an equivalent 'sleazy' area eg. Nana(?) compared to its more wholesome rivals...).

So would posters regard Pattaya as being sleazy, in comparison to say Bangkok, Phuket or Hua Hin, and if so what makes it so? The whole place or just some aspects?

Sleaze is much underrated. Some memorable moments have occurred in places many would consider sleazy. I look back with no little amount of fondness on the sleaze of Times Square, Granville (Vancouver), West Hollywood, downtown San Diego, everywhere in Fort Lauderdale. I'm confident readers in other locations could easily add their own with equal fondness.

I recall one summer evening happening upon the the infamous Adonis Theater on 8th ave. Those old enough to remember it may well describe it as sleazy, but would be ever so grateful to have it back again. We have Rudy Guiliani to thank for its demise--and other things.

I remember it well along with Stella's bar a short walk away, and my favorite sleaze bar was Hombre near 9th avenue by the Port Authority, Mayor Dinkins was great for my "Quality of life".

We have Rudy Guiliani to thank for its demise--and other things.

Rudy likes to take credit for killing the commercial sex establishments of Manhattan but it was really due to gentrification. The property becomes more valuable than the amount of income it could generate as a sex joint. Large real estate developers offer huge sums of money and the owners take it and to quote Liberace, cry all the way to the bank.

The same urban economic model is occurring in Bangkok now. Sukhumvit 11 is a good example. Once the home of 6 gay venues and now none. Hero being the last to sell out to big money. Huge up market condos and hotels replace the sleaze.

The sleaziness factor of Sunee/Jomtien Complex/Boyztown doesn't even compare to the sleaziness of the girly bar scene on many of the sois off of 2nd Rd in Pattaya or on Walking Street.
