Lawyer Recommendaton
Lawyer Recommendaton
First off, don't worry - my health is fine, but I'd like to make sure my paper work is in order after I die. I have a US will and a Thai will, but the lawyer who handled it has now retired and is living in Bangkok. I've tried explaining to my boyfriend our financial situation, but my Thai is not sufficient. So, does anyone have a Thai lawyer who is versed in US and Thai inheritance law, speaks both Thai and English, and is kind and gentle. Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Lawyer Recommendaton
I used Triple888 Law for drafting my Thai Will and subsequent revision. I have also used them for Thai Notary service and to do the probate for my Thai bf after he passed away.
Kelvin is the Managing Director and his wife Jaeb and other staff provide the legal services with the Thai court.
Kelvin is from Australia and has been involved in probates of foreign Wills drawn up in other countries. He most likely has handled probate for Wills covering USA assets - since in the USA the law governing Wills is dependent on each state's law, he might not be specifically familiar with that of the State where your assets are located.

Re: Lawyer Recommendaton
Today I completed and signed off on my Thai Will with Thai888 as 2lz2p recommended. I also highly recommend their law office for making your Thai will or any other legal matters that may come up.

Kelvin's paralegal office staff is very well trained and fully competent. They all speak near fluent English.
The office is in View Talay 5, Building D. That's the first building when entering View Talay 5. Enter the building, turn left, and the office is all the way down to the end of the hall, on the left.
The will comes beautifully bound. There will be one copy for you and a second copy that will be kept in their office. If you bring a flash drive they will be happy to place a copy of the will on the drive for you.
Their fee for the will is 6000 baht - roughly US $175, which I think is quite reasonable.
The procedure is as follows:
1. First contact Kelvin and let him know you wish to make a will.
2. Kelvin will send you via Email a checklist for all the documents you need to bring with you. A copy of the checklist is below.
3. When you have all the necessary documents, now make an appointment with Kelvin, where he will go over everything with you. You do not need to make any copies. Their office will make copies of what they need from you, although the appointment will go much quicker if you do bring copies - good quality copies that will be attached to the will.
4. Their office will send you, via Email, a draft copy of the will for you to check for any errors, additions, corrections, or whatever. The will documents will have both English and Thai translation. If all is correct, reply with an Email telling them everything is correct or, if there are any issues, let them know.
5. Their office will notify you when the will is ready for you to make an appointment to sign and accept the will. That is all done by the paralegal staff. You pay the fee at that time. Cash is preferred, but Prompt Pay and bank transfers are acceptable - however cash will be appreciated. Be prepared to sign your name around twenty times, or more. You will have to sign every single page of your own copy and every single page of their office copy.
I suggest naming their office as executor. They will handle everything. When I had my appointment with Kelvin once the checklist documents were ready, I had a list of questions ranging from how does my beneficiary actually get the money I'm leaving and how long does it take to who is responsible for the necessary notifications. I was pleased with all the answers. And they will be happy to provide all the assistance your beneficiary, whether he is Thai or farang, may need.
Also, Kelvin's office can handle everything if you ever become incapacitated or get dementia or Alzheimer's and can no longer handle things for yourself. Ask Kelvin about it. You ought to ask Kelvin about it even if you're not making a will or anything else.
Below is the checklist for the necessary documents for making the will. Although the checklist doesn't specify it, if you can get it, bring a copy of your alternate beneficiary's ID card or passport.

Re: Lawyer Recommendaton
Kelvin, Australian, is the Managing Director. His wife is the Thai lawyer who drafts the will and can handle probate with the Thai Court. They prepared my will several years ago and I have had them modify it twice - price was 2,000 baht each time. His wife also handled the probate for my Thai partner of 30 years when he passed away a little over 3 years ago. Her fee was 22,000 baht. The process took about 2 months. I also had them notarize a document for me (for use in Thailand). The fee for that was 500 baht.
